F-Droid and F-Droid Basic were updated to 2.0-rc1 with a fixes focused changelog. After our last TWIF we’ve sneakily promoted 2.0-rc0 as suggested for Basic updating all its users to our latest code. This made users happy to experience our improved app and made us happy to receive more crashes and issues reports. Having more people to test the UX and more devices/Android combinations to run the app help F-Droid get better.
Search has been one area that was greatly improved, with a better UX, better filtering and great results that pull info from categories and app data. So imagine our surprise when the user feedback was “search results make no sense” or worse “I get no results at all”.
We’ve posted a few days ago two test queries to exemplify how search should look. If you’ve updated to latest 2.0-rc1 and you don’t see any results, we are tracking this issue here. We’ve rarely seen random or unrelated search results in our testing before, and a fix was deployed for such cases, a database cleaning procedure that should run by itself daily, if necessary. The challenge for us now is to find out why some Android devices don’t run the fix, and we are gathering info in this issue. If you encounter any of these or any other problem, make sure you add your device info (model and Android version) to the existing open issues or to new ones. If Gitlab is grumpy and you can’t, you can still ping us on Fedi, Forum or anywhere else.
As part of our NLnet-funded GNU Taler project, we’ve completed a deliverable: exploring and implementing Taler support in the F-Droid client. App developers can try this now by getting an account for receiving Taler-based donations and publishing their Taler donation link in app metadata.
Catima — Loyalty Card Wallet was updated to 2.45.0 (F-Droid) and its dev, TheLastProject, wanted to add some news:
Catima 2.45.0 was released with Wear OS support (and switched to Reproducible Build on F-Droid). This marks the first time a Wear OS application is released to F-Droid.
Although Wear OS is a proprietary platform with no FOSS custom ROMs like Lineage and the likes available for it, it is based on Android and therefore you can basically write apps for it the same way you do for Android.
While there is no F-Droid client which supports Wear OS at this point, you can install the Wear OS Catima companion app from F-Droid (v1.0.0 Wear OS), enjoying the same general F-Droid confirmation that the app really is FOSS. Alternatively, if you have a smartphone that’s supported by Gadgetbridge, you can use Gadgetbridge support in Catima, which has existed since 2013 and is much more private than Wear OS is: Loyalty cards / passes.

Daniel Gultsch, the developer of Conversations has posted a 15 minute piece that’s worth a read, about digital independence and what 25 years of XMPP brings us. While we can hear echoes that very much define F-Droid too, like self-hosting, decentralization and federation, we have yet to dream of an IETF standard for “app distribution”. But if that time comes, will we have your vote?
GPSTest was updated to 3.10.6 after more than one and a half years. The changes are meant to maintain the app running in tip top shape.
Status - Chat, Wallet, Browser, Privacy super app with messenger, crypto wallet, browser, communities & more, was just added. Does the name seem familiar? It should, this is the brand new version of the app, a total rewrite as a separate app. You can read the introduction and migration post, and yes, you saw that date right, we’ve been collaborating with the developer since January to bring this app to F-Droid, and built reproducible! Since the old version a lot has changed, more than we could cover here, so do a deep-dive in past posts to get yourself up to date.

Luanti was updated to 5.17.0 and users are advised to update immediately as it fixes security vulnerabilities affecting both the client and server. You can read the change-log here. Also please make sure your friends and game peers also update, specially users that have the app installed from other centralized stores, as we heard rumors not only that the update is not available there but that the app was outright removed on baseless accusations. Did anyone mumble “keep android open“?

FrOSCon 2026 in Sankt Augustin, Germany, was a first for F-Droid as well as for me. It was the first time F-Droid had a booth at FrOSCon, and it was also my first FrOSCon and my first time in Germany. Getting to spend the weekend representing F-Droid there with Sebastian made it particularly special.
Our booth was in a very good spot, between FlorisBoard and Phosh, with Ubuntu Touch nearby and Fedora directly opposite us. We also had postmarketOS nearby. It made for a lively part of the exhibition, with plenty of people moving between the different projects. The people around were especially lovely and were friendly, helpful and easy to talk to, which made the long, very hot days at the booth much easier.
FrOSCon has a strong hardware presence, and there was plenty to see across the exhibition. The Phosh & postmarketOS team were showing their operating systems on different devices, including demonstrations involving Waydroid and Android applications. It was nice having projects working on different parts of the free software mobile ecosystem so close together.
At the F-Droid booth, Sebastian and I spent most of the weekend talking to users.
Many visitors were already using F-Droid and came by to share their experiences or ask questions. Others were completely new to F-Droid, and we were able to help them get started. We came away with a good number of new users, which was one of the most satisfying parts of the weekend.
F-Droid 2.0 was a frequent topic. Several people came with questions or issues they had encountered, sometimes simply showing us what was happening on their phones. Android Developer Verification also generated a lot of discussion, with visitors interested in what it could mean for F-Droid and the future of app distribution on Android.
There was also a surprising amount of curiosity about what happens behind the app. People asked how F-Droid is managed, how we find the resources to keep the project running and how the project is funded. These conversations were particularly useful because they gave us an opportunity to explain some of the work that is less visible to users.
We did not receive donations directly at the booth, but we noticed generous donations arrive through OpenCollective around the time of FrOSCon. While we cannot attribute them with certainty, the timing and the conversations at the event make us confident that FrOSCon helped.
One thing I noticed compared with FOSDEM earlier this year was that FrOSCon gave us more time with individual visitors. FOSDEM has a much larger crowd, but at FrOSCon people could stop for longer and have a proper conversation. For a project like F-Droid, those conversations are valuable.
The heat certainly made the weekend memorable too. It was unusually hot in the region, including at the venue, but the people around us made it considerably easier to get through.
By the end of the weekend, we had met existing F-Droid users, introduced the project to new ones, had some very useful conversations about where F-Droid is heading, and spent a great couple of days with the wider free software community.

ArcaneChat was updated to 2.58.1 but only for armeabi-v7a and x86_64. Network glitches made the other 2 arches fail, and we are rebuilding them as we speak.
Aurora Droid, An alternative to the default F-Droid app, got an update after 5 years. What’s new? UI rewritten from scratch, modern tooling, four install methods, actions run in background, nicer notifications and better update logic.
Gadgetbridge and Bangle.js Gadgetbridge were updated to 0.93.0 with a nice changelog. But more interesting, also CoMaps - Hike, Bike, Drive Offline with Privacy was updated to 2026.08.07-3-FDroid, fixing a bug. Why mention these is one paragraph? Reading the Gadgetbridge changes we’ve noticed one killer feature: CoMaps: Add support for navigation instructions. Yes, you can now have, in a fully FLOSS package, your watch as a route helper in your voyages.
LocalSend was updated to 1.18.0 after a one and a half year pause. The changes look more like bug fixes, as the app was handsome enough already, yet we’ve seen it glitch a lot, specially when the user was switching to other apps. This update should make it not only more reliable but also faster.
Joplin was updated to 3.6.21. A few weeks ago users we’re asking why our Joplin is so old if the upstream tags 3.7.x already. In our wish to fix our “slowness” we’ve updated the recipe to 3.7.2 and call it done. Only to find out that now users also needed to update their servers to the newer versions too. It appears 3.7 is still considered unstable by the developer and we should, for now, stick with 3.6.x. This confusion was based on some missing bits of information regarding how upstream deems versions stable. This has been clarified, the “new” incompatible build was removed and users should make sure they run latest 3.6 now.
Prav was updated to 2.20.1+prav which brings it up to date with Conversations, its base app. What’s more important is that Prav covers the same use case Quicksy did, which was unfortunately, shut down last month. An XMPP client? Which case? If you and me, FLOSS enthusiasts, know and understand the importance (and privacy and security) of a self-hosted service, most big monopoly silo services users know one way to interact: phone number in-app. Prav is the only one left doing this now for a decentralized federated open protocol. If this is news to you and you didn’t update to any 2.0 development builds yet, hello and welcome, so many things have changed, you’ll just have to experience it. Navigate to the F-Droid or Basic app details page, check “Allow beta updates” in the top right three dot menu, and update.
In website news, our mirror sync permission issue should be fixed now. Do ping us if you see any package that refuses to install, after you’ve made sure you got the latest index update, of course.
FrOSCon 2026 Schedule, Programm App für die FrOSCon, was just added and make sure you install it to easily find our F-Droid contributors booth next week-end. If you already have Giggity installed, you can use it with the official schedule (https://programm.froscon.org/2026/schedule.xml) too.
Rethink: DNS + Firewall + VPN was updated to v0.5.5z which appears to be a bit unstable. Some users got some crashes so maybe avoid updating to this version for now. We’ll disable it in our repo while the developers figure stuff out.

Back in July we noticed that 萊姆輸入法 source changed some strings and autoupdate has not picked any updates… for the last 3 years. We are now up to date at 7.4.0 and we’re keeping an eye on logs for any other app that might need extra attention.
We’ve mentioned Snowflake Volunteer at inclusion time, but did you know how this app came into existence out of Orbot’s “Kindness Mode”? The folks at the Tor Project host a post that explains how tools and contributors helped.

Testing of F-Droid main and F-Droid Basic continues. We got a couple of error reports from the 2.0 latest alpha11. We urge you to update your client to the latest release and test it thoroughly. If you see any errors, remember to send them in.
In the process of modernizing the app, we’ve raised the minimum needed system version to Android 7. Looking at the submitted error reports, we are glad to see most of them are from Android 15 and 16, meaning users devices run recent system code benefiting from security fixes. At the same time, we want users of older Android versions to benefit from our client enhancements. If you’re on Android 12 to Android 14 remember that you’ll enjoy unattended updates as usual, on top of a nicely looking app with Expressive You support to customize its visuals.
But, we’ve seen few to none reports from devices running Android 7 to 11, and while we are developing the client carefully, we know bugs will still pop-up. Yes, on these old devices, you’re still getting annoyed by pressing “Install” for each app update, but the new features, the evolved search, the new warning system for old apps and all the dozens UX changes are worth the small pain.
You’ve read above and want to help? Get the latest 2.0-alpha by navigating to the F-Droid or Basic app details page, check “Allow beta updates” in the top right three dot menu, and update.
In F-Droid repository news, the last two cycles encountered a permission issue affecting some packages. Basically the files are inaccessible to the browser on the web page and in client when the main server or the primary mirrors are used. We’ve fixed them manually for now, while working for a fix in our automation code that drives this part of the process. We track this issue here.
Fun fact: You can see in the linked issue above pics how 2.0 client will present such an error, an improvement over the old annoying toast blocking the screen.

HomeFeed - RSS Widget was updated to 1.5.0 as the code was saved from the crashing developer SSD, but… not the key. Hence, new key means you need to reinstall the app, as mentioned above for the other app.
